Don and Loretta Smith Retire!
After thirty one outstanding productions with 2nd Star, our esteemed Music Director, Mr. Donald K. Smith has announced that "Man of La Mancha" will be his last show with us.  Mr. Don and his wife Loretta have been with us since our 2nd season!  Their perfectionism and great skills have helped mold 2nd Star from very near the beginning.  Their expertise will be missed both in the musical productions and in the business of running the house.

Should they get bored, the 2nd Star door is always open, but in the meantime, enjoy your extra time, Don and Loretta, knowing that you are loved and appreciated.  Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts!

2nd Star Wins Ruby Griffith Award!
In 1969 the British Embassy Players established the Ruby Griffith Awards for outstanding achievement in theatrical productions in Washington, DC and surrounding areas.
On July 12th, 2nd Star Productions was awarded the 2008-2009 Ruby Griffith Award for
Outstanding Achievement in a Musical for  “Man of La Mancha”.  This year approximately 30 theatre companies were considered, twelve of those for musicals. This the third Ruby Griffith for 2nd Star, the former being Outstanding Achievement for Mame in 2004 and 2nd runner up in 2002 for Guys and Dolls. Pictured are, from left: presenter Sarah Frankland, Michael Galizia (Don Quixote), Christine Asero (Dulcinea), Brian Douglas (Sancho).
Congratulations to the cast and crew, and a special thanks to Don Smith and his orchestra!
Congratulations to the cast of "Brigadoon"

The story: The Thayers have summered on
Golden Pond in New England for almost a lifetime.
They return, as always, now in their 70’s and 60’s, for yet another summer.  Their daughter joins them with her new boyfriend and then leaves the boyfriend’s 13-year-old son in the Thayer’s care while they travel to Europe.  The boy brings new life into the wry old gentleman and the dry humor brings many a smile. The local mailman who had a crush on the daughter when they were growing up provides the area news and a local touch. There are warm moments aplenty in this marvelous show about a long time loving couple.

Reservation lines will open mid February.  Group reservations and season ticket holders may call at any time and leave messages in the appropriate mailbox.
Auditions -- "The Secret Garden"
2nd Star Productions announces auditions for the musical
"The Secret Garden"
Auditions will be held at Bowie Playhouse on
February 1 and 2 at 7 PM

The Secret Garden will be performed at Bowie Playhouse, weekends from
June 4 through June 27, 2010
The cast is 12 males, 10 females, 1 male child, and 1 female child.  The boy's role is for an actor who can play a 10 year old; girl's is a playable 11 year old.  Both have major solos and duets.  The girl dances.  These roles may be double cast.  There are no chorus roles for children. Children without vocal and acting experience should probably not audition for this show.

The show will be directed by Jane Wingard and musically directed by Joe Biddle.
Please bring your resume and headshot if you have them and a list of all conflicts for Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7PM and Saturdays at 11AM for the rehearsal period and daily for two weeks prior to the opening on June 4.  No show conflicts are allowed.  Bring your sheet music for the music audition and be prepared to dance.  Your music should show your voice off to its best advantage and be appropriate for the show/role.  The music is involved for all roles.

This enchanting classic of children's literature is now a brilliant musical by a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright. Orphaned in India, an 11-year-old girl returns to Yorkshire to live with an embittered, reclusive uncle and his invalid son. The estate includes a magic locked garden. Flashbacks, dream sequences, a strolling chorus of ghosts, and beautiful music dramatize The Secret Garden's compelling tale of regeneration. This Tony Award winner is a treasure for children and adults. The story follows Mary Lennox after the death of her parents in India to the moors of England and her widower recluse uncle and ill cousin.  The "ghosts" of the deceased inspire those left behind to grasp the life in front of them, ending with a joyous look toward the future.  The Secret Garden contains some of the most beautiful music ever written for musical theatre with book and lyrics by Marsha Norman and music by Lucy Simon. It is based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
